As administrator of the Wisconsin County Mutual Insurance Corporation, Aegis Corporation staff host hundreds of important risk management training sessions and events throughout the state every year, but one that stands out involves Wisconsin law enforcement professionals, who put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities.
On October 5, 2016, close to 30 member departments from around the state gathered for the County Mutual and Community Insurance Corporation's 5th Annual Advanced Law Enforcement Risk Training (A.L.E.R.T.) Law Enforcement Challenge. The event was held at the Portage County Sheriff's Department Rifle Range in Stevens Point.
“Our law enforcement officers in every corner of this state get up every morning and face oftentimes daunting situations to ensure we are safe,” said John A. Dirkse, Executive Vice President of Aegis Corporation, which administers the County Mutual and Community Insurance Corporation. “To make sure this year’s challenge best reflected situations our officers encounter in the field, we brought together past participants earlier this year to create our most challenging event.”
The 2016 event involved a timed physical and shooting skills challenge. Notable changes to the course were an additional 60 pounds to the dummy drag, creating a total of 120 pounds and changes to the scoring system on the respective targets. Handguns were also fired standing from a barricaded position.
Prizes were awarded to top finishers and cash prizes awarded to the top finishers' departments. The 2016 winners were:
First Place
Floyd Lindsey, Adams County Sheriff's Office
Second Place
Eric Hartwig, Iowa County Sheriff's Office
Third Place
Dell Stone, Polk Co. Sheriff's Office
Fourth Place
Alex Walrath, Forest Co. Sheriff's Office
Fifth Place
Michael Huth, Winnebago County Sheriff's Office
“It is an honor to host this event each year with our state’s law enforcement community,” said Bruce Scott of Aegis Corporation, a former City of Milwaukee police officer who now operates the A.L.E.R.T. program for the County Mutual and Community Insurance Corporation. “We look forward to gathering again next year to once again have our members compete, network and hopefully bring home a prize to their department.”
